Ex libris - A little of cultural history

In the 20. century the big sized ex-librises became more frequent. It might be principally explained that huge part of ex-librises were made for the collectors. Ex-librises had more distance from books, and had own life, they became objects of exchange and most of them were taken into nice albums without theirs original sphere of action.

Early in the century the prevailing trend the secession inspirated the artists of the age. At the time of the turn of the century ex-libris exceeded its original function.

It claimed up to date technology, bigger expertise because its quality became more demanding. Creators were respected in a growing tendency, and the more precious prints were appreciated as original works right now. Evolved the organized collections of the ex-librises, they had to indicate the book's owner only in secondary task: the name on them hallmarked the artistic works already.

Rejtő Antal book ex-libris Ex-libris is a typically modern art therefore it became strong mostly in big towns, where art and spiritual life was vivid. The first self-supporting ex-libris exhibition was in Budapest in Hungary. The first provincial ex-libris exhibition was in 1928 in Debrecen, which town was the central of the collectors, the artists(József Nagy, Toroczkai, Dienes and Haranghy), theirs association, the guild of Dürer Ajtósi and the ex-libris life until the II. world war. Modern ex-libris was spreading in Hungary, but the value of the works of hungarian artists reached the world standard only in the twenties and thirties. The focuses were appearing in this time, what are the citadels of ex-libris since then. For example Budapest, what always played the leading role in every respect, besides Szeged, Debrecen and some of the cities of Partium (for example: Brassó, Nagyvárad ), the last few were important in hungarian ex-libris life after Trianon.
